In short
ISTQB® is about testing software, IREB® is about requirements engineering – eliciting and managing requirements. Put simply: IREB helps you build the right thing; ISTQB helps you verify it correctly. Both are vendor-neutral, internationally recognized and modular, from Foundation to Expert level.
ISTQB at a glance
The ISTQB Certified Tester scheme is the global standard for testing knowledge. Start with the Foundation Level (fundamentals, test process, test design). Advanced-level certificates such as Test Manager and Test Analyst build on it, plus specialist modules like Testing with Generative AI.
IREB at a glance
The IREB CPRE (Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering) is the standard for requirements work. The Foundation Level teaches how to elicit, document, validate and manage requirements – the basis for software doing the right thing and for requirements being testable at all.
Which one fits me?
- Tester, test manager, test automation engineer: ISTQB – Foundation, then Advanced Level by role.
- Business analyst, requirements manager, product owner: IREB CPRE.
- Project lead, quality manager: often both – at least one Foundation Level each for a shared vocabulary.
Can you combine both?
Yes – and it is often the strongest path. Poor requirements are one of the most common root causes of defects; understanding requirements engineering and testing closes the gap between “what did we want?” and “does it work?”.
