What is ISTQB® – and why is it worth it?
The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) defines a globally consistent qualification scheme for software testers, with over one million certificates issued. For employers, the certificate is a reliable proof of competence; for testers, it is often a prerequisite in tenders and project staffing – especially at large corporations and public authorities.
The levels: Foundation → Advanced → Specialist → Expert
- Foundation Level (CTFL): the foundation – core terminology, the test process, test design techniques, test management basics, tools. No entry requirements.
- Advanced Level (CTAL): specialisation as a Test Analyst or Test Management; the Foundation certificate is a prerequisite.
- Specialist modules: e.g. Testing with Generative AI (CT-GenAI) for AI-assisted testing.

What does the ISTQB® certification cost?
There are two cost components: the seminar (preparation by an accredited provider) and the exam fee paid to the certification body.
Self-study without a seminar is formally possible (exam fee only) but considerably riskier in practice: the exams test terminology exactly as defined in the ISTQB® glossary – accredited seminars train precisely that, including mock exams.
How the exam works
- Format: 40 multiple-choice questions (CTFL), 60 minutes, pass mark 65 % – in German or English; non-native speakers receive extra time.
- Location: online with remote proctoring or at a test center/classroom seminar – usually directly after the seminar.
- Result: immediately after the exam; the certificate is valid indefinitely.
Preparation: what really helps
- Use the official syllabus and glossary as your reference – the exam asks for exactly these terms.
- Work through mock exams under time pressure until you consistently score above 80 %.
- Make it practical: apply each test design technique once to an example from your own project – that sticks far better than rote learning.
- 3 seminar days + 1–2 days of self-study are sufficient for most participants.
